Topic:   Part editor and "detail" field

What do folk put in the "detail" field for a component? I understand "description" but I'm trying to figure out what the detail field is all about. I generally use miniMRP for electronic parts such as resistors, capacitors etc. so it might be useful if I knew what the detail field could offer me.

I might add that the online user manual doesn't show the detail field in images so, I guess it's a new feature and the manual needs to catch up.

Yes, the on-line manual is out of date.

Are you talking about the field on the "Item Detail" screen that is located between the "Revision" field and the "Type" field?

Yes, the filed between revision and type.

It's just an extra description field. I suppose you could put something in there such as color or size. In the electronics business you could maybe put a word in there indicating whether it's a Surface Mount or a Through Hole component. That would allow you to filter all SMT parts without using the category.

Up to you. Use it or don't.

Historically though it appeared a few years ago when MiniMRP gained the ability to import Legacy databases from the Defunct Trilogy Design "Parts and vendors" (P&V) Inventory/BOM programs - which is where we came from. Having used P&V for many years it was great that we could import most of our Parts and Vendors data into MiniMRP. The 'detail' field was quite a prominent field in P&V so, I suppose, bringing that across into MiniMRP just made life easier for those many users looking for an alternative to "Trilogy Parts and Vendors".

Thanks very much for the guidance. I did begin using it for SMD/Leaded so I think I'll continue as I build up the component data base.
