Topic:   PVImporter: 5.0.16.0 Error while importing data

By: GuestPosted on: Jun 22 2026 at 01:17:22 PM
Hello!

We have been using Parts & Vendors for way too long (with many issues) and are looking to finally import our database to miniMRP.

During the process of 'restoring' > selecting our PV database > and importing, we run into this error:

'Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.
The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data.'

(I can provide the copy/paste message with all the details if needed)

What I am guessing is happening is that one of our columns in one of our tables exceeds the number of characters allowed in miniMRP's field. I looked through our Item/Part table (and can check other tables), it looks like none of our columns exceed 255 characters. In the 'Part Title' column, some of our parts exceed 50 characters. Since I am not sure what character limits exist in miniMRP, I wanted to ask if we could get some assistance! In the meantime I'll attempt to shorten the 50+ character titles to less than 50 characters and re-try importing our database.

I read an old post from 2019 mentioning a newer version of the PVImport tool. We are working on getting our database converted to MySQL and to use the Pro Version, but in the meantime we wanted to use the trial period to see how it would work for us.

Thank you in advance!

It would be interesting to know which table/column is too small. We can't make the column any bigger but it is possible that we'd manage it better by truncating the excess rather than crashing.

There's lots of columns and tables. Part numbers, description etc in MiniMRP are 255 character. Category is 50 characters. Revision is 10 characters.

All fields in customer and supplier names and address are 255 characters.

Would you be able to backup and email your PV file? If it's not too big.

Although, I will add that your version 5.0.16 is quite old.

I was able to email the database. I included the error message a description of what has been happening during the importing process. We haven't found the issue, but will continue to troubleshoot. Thank you.

We got your file. Thanks.

Ignore the comment from 'Guest' about the version 5.0.16 That version of the PV importer is current.

I'll come back to once I've found your bug.

I just want to add that this page relates only to migration of the now unsupported Trilogy Parts and Vendors (P&V) database into MiniMRP.

After looking at Guest's database it appeared that some data inside the Parts and Vendors file was corrupt making some records appear much larger than they were. Once those rows were removed from the Parts and Vendors data file the data migrated over to MiniMRP successfully..
